Tsukubasan Shrine (筑波山神社, Tsukubasan Jinja) stands at the foot of Mount Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture — one of the most ancient sacred mountains of the Kanto region. The mountain itself has two peaks, recognized as a divine couple: the western peak (Nantai-san, the “male body mountain”) and the eastern peak (Nyotai-san, the “female body mountain”). The shrine enshrines Izanagi and Izanami, the primal divine couple of Japanese mythology.
For this reason, Mount Tsukuba has been venerated since ancient times as a power spot for marriage, family, and harmony. The dual peaks form a natural enmusubi symbol visible from miles away.
Visitors can climb the mountain on foot or by cable car / ropeway, and many couples make the visit specifically to walk between the two peaks together.
