Sakitama Shrine (前玉神社, Sakitama Jinja) is located in Gyoda, Saitama Prefecture, on the grounds of the Sakitama Kofun Park — an enormous archaeological site with one of Japan’s largest concentrations of ancient burial mounds. The shrine sits atop one of the kofun mounds and has stood there since at least the 7th century.
The deities enshrined are Sakitama-hiko no Mikoto and Sakitama-hime no Mikoto — a divine couple. Because of this dual deity arrangement, Sakitama Shrine has been worshiped for matchmaking, marriage, family blessings, and devoted partnership.
The shrine’s location atop an ancient burial mound gives it a particularly quiet, ancient atmosphere — and the surrounding park is beautiful for walks during cherry blossom or autumn foliage seasons.
