Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine

Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine (沼袋氷川神社) is located in Nakano Ward, Tokyo. Like the other Hikawa shrines of the region, it enshrines Susano-o, his consort Kushinada-hime, and the great enmusubi deity Okuninushi.

The shrine’s signature feature is a great Couple Sakaki Tree (Meoto-sakaki) — two sacred trees that have grown together at the trunk, treated as a living symbol of marriage and union. Walking around the joined trunk three times with a partner (or while envisioning the partner you seek) is the traditional prayer.

Numabukuro is a quiet, local shrine of considerable historical depth — well worth a stop for those exploring the lesser-known matchmaking sites of central Tokyo.
