Koishi Shrine (Renamed: Tsumakoi Shrine)

Tsumakoi Shrine (恋し神社) sits in the highlands of Tsumakoi Village, Gunma Prefecture. The village’s name itself comes from the legend of Yamato Takeru, who from this very plateau cried out in mourning for his beloved Otachibana-hime — “Azuma haya!” (“Oh, my wife!”) — after she had sacrificed herself in the sea.

The shrine commemorates this moment of devoted, lifelong love. Couples and singles visit specifically to pray for the kind of love that endures separation and time.

Surrounded by cabbage fields and the high alpine meadows of Tsumakoi, the shrine offers one of the most scenic settings in Japan for a love-themed visit — particularly in late spring through summer.
