Old-Fashioned Matchmaking Charms I Once Heard About

If you are part of any large social environment — a school, an office — there is bound to be at least one or two people of the opposite sex you find interesting. When that happens, the natural wish is to get closer, and perhaps even to start dating. Some confident people believe that romance must be won by your own effort, and that’s true — but many others choose to try a small charm or fortune-telling as well. The pull of charms and divination tends to find women’s hearts at any age.

So what kinds of matchmaking charms exist? One I’ve heard of: write the name of the person you like on an eraser, draw a heart around it, keep the eraser hidden in its case, and use it up completely without anyone noticing. Another, which young girls used to do, was to write the boy’s name on the inside of your left arm with a pen and cover it with a bandage for three days. These feel more like elementary-school or middle-school charms — adults don’t really carry erasers around anymore.

By high school, the charms become more modern: setting a photo of a power-spot or a couple’s lock-screen on your smartphone to attract love.

Charms remain pleasant at any age. There are even fortune-telling services in Osaka that incorporate them. Perhaps something to try.
