Izusan Shrine (伊豆山神社, Izusan Jinja), here featured as a power spot, sits on the mountainside above Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture. The shrine looks down across Sagami Bay and is one of the most powerful matchmaking power spots in the entire Kanto region.
It is most famous as the place where Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Masako pledged their love against her family’s wishes — a romance that defied opposition and gave rise to the Kamakura shogunate. Praying here is especially meaningful for those whose love faces obstacles.
The 837 stone steps leading to the main hall are themselves part of the prayer — a physical declaration of commitment. A famous “Couple’s Pine” tree halfway up marks where the couple is said to have rested.
