Tamashiki Shrine

Tamashiki Shrine (玉敷神社, Tamashiki Jinja) is located in Kazo, Saitama Prefecture, and is famously known as the home of the magnificent Great Wisteria — a 400-year-old wisteria tree designated a Natural Monument of Saitama Prefecture. When the wisteria blooms each spring (early May), the shrine becomes one of the most beautiful destinations in the entire prefecture.

The deity enshrined is Onamuchi no Mikoto — another name for Okuninushi, the supreme deity of matchmaking. As such, Tamashiki has long been a power spot for love, marriage, and lasting bonds.

Visiting during the wisteria season combines two of Japan’s most poetic experiences: matchmaking prayer and seasonal flower-viewing.
